How/when do I get my $900?

Update: The Payments start on the 6th April and will take up to 6 weeks to be completed! ATO LINK

The stimulus payments are being sent out at the beginning of April. People who have already had their tax returns assessed will be the first to receive their payment. The fastest way to receive payment is directly into your bank account (ATO SOURCE).Apparently the first will arrive around the 6th of April! At first I thought that the payments would be sent out via cheque, but according to the ATO they will be sent out the same way that you received your tax return last year!

According to the ATO you are eligible if-

  • you have lodged or will lodge your 2007-08 income tax return before 30 June 2009 or if you have been granted a deferred date by the Tax Office before Wednesday 18 February 2009 and you lodge your return by the deferred date
  • your 2007-08 taxable income does not exceed $100,000
  • your adjusted tax liability for 2007-08 is greater than nil, and
  • you are an Australian resident for tax purposes for the 2007-08 financial year.

How much will you get-

  • $900 bonus will be paid if you have a taxable income up to and including $80,000
  • $600 bonus will be paid if you have a taxable income exceeding $80,000 but not exceeding $90,000
  • $250 bonus will be paid if you have a taxable income exceeding $90,000 but not exceeding $100,000

How is it distributed??
All cheque and EFT payments will be made using a post code selection process that is randomly generated, ensuring all post codes are evenly distributed to each state and territory each night (using the Australia Post predetermined percentage spread). For this reason and because of security concerns, we are not planning to publish a distribution schedule.

    4. I am in new South Wales and I have had nothing yet. Unlike many I am hearing about who are going overseas to spend OUR money..I will be spending mine here. Plenty of nice Aussie destinations to head. They said the pensioners spent theirs at clubs.. well from the pensioners I know..I doubt it..but even if some did at least it stayed in Aus

    9. Just wondered how the payments are going out. For example, I lived with my partner at tax time last year and we are with the same bank. He received his today, but I haven’t yet received mine. I was of the understanding that it was being paid out via random post codes? Can anyone help?

    19. I would say that being a government agency that it would go in overnight . And it seems that the payments are completely random , could just be they pick a certain amount of people in a certain postcode per night and distribute the money that way . Im certainly not hilding my breath for the payment before the last day , i certainly could use it but i have better things to do then wonder when im getting ” free” money

    There is no way of knowing when you’ll get the payment. The whole process is randomly generated; there are no postcodes being paid before others, nothing alphabetical, no formula… Everyone eligible will be paid by 20th May, end of story. Best thing to do is to pretend it’s not going to happen and then feel surprised when it does. Checking your account each day is only going to make it feel longer.
    What can you really get for $900 these days?

It will be nice to be able to work in the garden buy my daughter the sports pants she wants not the cheaper ones for once and have a date night with my husband without worrying that we aren’t paying something else.     64. In response to greedy. I’m not a bad person. I pay my taxes and I work damn hard for my crappy weekly pay. I, like so many others, live on a very tight budget just to get by. This money gives us a chance to treat ourselves, maybe for the first time in a very long time. I’m checking my account everyday because work has been slowing down and I’m not getting enough pay to get by. By the time it gets in, I will probably just be giving it all back to the people I currently owe money to.

    Don’t get me wrong, I understand where you are coming from, somewhat. It’s just really frustrating knowing that it’s supposed to be coming yet it still hasn’t arrived yet. I think I know what I’m gunna spend mine on if it ever arrives. I’ll treat my girlfriend to a real date.     69. I’m starting to question the whole postcode theory. My workmate lives in 4510 and got hers last monday, and her mum got hers the next morning. But my mum, who also lives in 4510 still hasn’t recieved anything a week later. Of other friends who have been lucky enough to get theirs, the majority of people from the same postcode are still waiting. I’m also one of those ‘money hungry’ people (thanks Greedy) who check their bank accounts daily (my phone provider is going to love me). Not because I am greedy or ungrateful, but because I work for a minimum retail wage and have bills to pay like everyone else.     I work for a financial institution in QLD and have seen many members, and friends, have their $900 deposited into their accounts.

    96. its my understanding that the reason why people are recieving it quicker than others is that they dont want to send out large amounts at once so they pick a few postcodes a day and thats that. it doesnt seem fair many people are relying on the little payout they do receive and at this rate we arent going to receive it until sometime in may! this is ridiculous!!!!

    110. Freakin people saying to wait it out because its a gift, and we didnt earn it. I want to stab you in the eyeballs! Most of us DID earn it. It’s a tiny portion of the percentage of our hard earned money that gets taken away every week to feed this government. The least they could do is get it to us in a reasonable amount of time. I’m not pissed because I haven’t got mine yet, I’m annoyed because we were told payments would go out on April 6th, so all this time I have been anticipating having this 900. Then AFTER the due date they tell us we will have to wait another 6 weeks for it. It’s the lack of communication and organisation that I think is why so many people are on here cracking it about not getting the money yet. Still disagree with the postcode theory, as I know of many people who haven’t recieved anything in said ‘recievers’ postcodes.     Bazboo, it is not true that it was stated payments would go out ON April 6th. It has always been clearly stated that they would go out FROM that date onwards and for 6 weeks up until May 16th.     For all those who think the money is being issued out by postcode you can kiss that theory bye-bye. It’s being issued out by suburb… alphabetically. So if your in a suburb beginning with X,Y,Z you will get it last!
    So how bout you stop tying up the phone lines and internet lines (some of us have ‘work’ related things to get done and can’t because lines are busy)… around mid May check your account then.. and you know what you will find.. K Rudd’s $900 will be sitting there waiting for you to blow it on what ever tickles your fancy!! Or you can keep posting sad message on here saying ‘where is my money’ ‘I work hard, I pay tax, I want my money’ ‘I check my account and letter box each day but still now money’ god so sad some of you! I want the money like every single one of you but the difference between you andd me.. I have the patients, it’s not a matter of life or death if i get it or i don’t. The world won’t end because I didn’t get my stimulus package. Life is to short to worry about $900 which is nothing!!

    First thing, technically, we did earn the $900 as it came out of our wages to prop up a gov’t who is not content with a 10% that is supposed to mean no other tax, but has turned into a, actually we need to add more tax to everything and keep the 10% (alcopops go on).
    I am happy that I am getting the $900 back unexpectedly, especially since I just had another $900 in unexpected fees today. So I am living very close to the skin of my teeth right now. Thank god I had a little savings. This money back is going to help get me out of a tight spot. Its not an entitlement, but it sure as hell would help to get a difinitive ‘this is your likely date’ rather than a 6 week period of uncertainty.
    I personally would rather have seen a list of suburbs or whatever showing what dates who would get what, even if it meant I was last. It would be nice for peice of mind.

    132. I spent the first 7 months of the tax year in the Army posted overseas so paid no tax.
    I then transfered to the army reserves, so earned tax free (with a few months between this but only earned a few thousand taxable during this time).

    So I got all my tax back. Therefore I am not eligible for the $900.

    Rapists and child molesters will get $900 but a bloke like me who actually went and served our country and community gets nothing.

    i see hundreds of these cheques come in every day, from people who live in both wembley AND Belmont and all around. THE MONEY IS BEING PAID RANDOMLY, HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH POSTCODES OR ALPHABETICAL ORDER as people in both Wembley and Belmont have been receiving their cheques, regardless of what letter their suburb starts with.

    You will get paid your money if you are eligible, and it will go into either your bank account or you will receive a cheques ( whichever way you last lodged your tax return)

    IF you are counting on this money because you already spent it? then more fool you, you are a foolish stupid person. Never spend money unless you have it, whether its promised by the goverment or anyone. Unless it is in your hand/ or account, then you do not HAVE that money to spend.

    As to a 3rd stimulus package, sorry to dissapoint, it has already been said that it will be HIGHLY UNLIKELY that cash bonuses will be handed out again. So what can you do about that? stop spending money and start saving it, because this recession will leave you in for a rough ride ( unless you already have substantial savings accumulated) or the other thing, face that nasty swear word that starts with a J – yes get a job, start looking and stop waiting for your country to support your living expenses. You will not get far if you think there will be handouts coming along every few months, you will be living in a box eating out of soup kitchens.

    Isn’t it a wonderful thing, that in this day and age we have a social support system that actually hands money out to people, there was none of this in the last depression, you would get ration slips, thats all. Survive as you could, so to those that think they have it HARD, think about those that survived before you. they did what they could to get by, not sat on the internet ( all you poor people must have some money to afford that hey) they got off their backsides and did whatever jobs they could, even just for a meal. SO perhaps just perhaps THINK wisely about where you will spend your stimulus when it does arrive, on things you need not things you want, because the cash cow won’t be milked forever.

    I am sick of the Dole Bludgers getting hand outs, go find a job you bloody lazy people, I am also sick of the people who earn over $80 000 getting any cash, don’t they earn enough?

    What about the Working Class get what they deserve, although $900 is nothing to write home about – like many others on here who aren’t stoners and actually have families to support this money is going to go on taking my family out for the day I am sure my 2 year old would love a day at Lollipops PlayLand, my wife would like to go out for dinner – and the rest we are saving.

    This country is in financial trouble and it looks as though the country is doomed if the future of our country relies on these dole bludging, lazy, stoners and theives.

    I was waiting on this package to purchase a guitar amp quicker than I could without it, not that I needed it to do so, but I used it for its rightful purpose, stimulate business in local shops.

    But listen to this guys..I have three friends that have been totally shafted

    They got there thing in the mail. The first page was a tax withholding statement ect ect. And instead of a check being attached to the back. They got a FINE. Thats right, A FINE and Rudd wants money from them.

    Could this just be a cover up by the government to find people who have not paid there taxes. Because by the time the Gov have sent out all these fines, It prolly would have cost them nothing to give all the other Australians money!
    So consider this as a possibility that the gov is using this as a sneaky way to find and fine all those Tax Cheats out there.

    208. I rang the ATO today – to ‘check’ I was eligible and if it was hitting my account as I had arranged earlier. ( I got a cheque last year )

    They can only tell you when you are receiving it if it has already been processed. Approx 3 days before you actually receive it. ( mine has not been processed as yet .. grrr )

    It is totally random – some in particular post codes will receive – others will have to wait.. so the ’system does not break”.

    I know it is hard and frustrating, but do not panic if yours has not arrived and some have got it. This is how it is supposed to work.

    Sadly, it seems it is actually going to be the whole 6 weeks as they have said all along. :(

    218. Here is my specific circumstance. I spoke to the ATO on Friday. Very helpful and pleasant people by the way.
    I was a mix of self employed and PAYE taxpayer. I ended up with a tax debt and a tax refund. The tax refund ALMOST covered the debt (was $192. short)…as I didn’t pay it, it kept getting interest until it was a total owing of $255. Early this year the ATO WIPED my debt (without me being asked) and as a result they reissued me with a tax assesment notice that states I was tax neutral for last years (paid zero net tax)…and you guessed it…even though as a small business operator I paid around $16k in GST I do not get the Rudd Bucks. At least my wife will…eventually. Still no money at Quakers Hill 2763.

    Tommo. Have you considered directly contacting the ATO to ask this very question yourself?

    If you received ALL your tax back from last years return, regardless of how many casual jobs,then that means you do not receive it.” It is a bonus for those that PAID tax, and what you are saying is you did not pay tax as it was ALL returned, due to your tax threshhold level

    You can look up the ato at : http://www.ato.gov.au for all that info

    This is from the ATO website

    “Am I eligible?
    Your eligibility and the amount you are paid will be based on your individual 2007-08 tax return.

    You are eligible to receive the payment if:

    230. hey there, just type in ato website in google, then click on the first thing you see, will say about stimulus package, so click on that it will say a heap of bs but scroll to the bottom and it will say to check if you get it, it will ask you if you were under 18 last year, just click on the box and then go next, then i think it asked you to put in you amount of money you paid tax, but just do what it says, its very easy and only takes a minute to do, good luck, if you cant find it let me know and i will look it up again fopr you

    232. how did you go still not get it.did you go to the home page, click on the australian government tax bonus payment. scroll to bottom, it will say tax bonus calculator. click on that. when open you will see on right top. takes 5 to 10 minutes to complete, but does not take that long only takes about 1 minute. click on start and answer questions, its very very easy, if i can do it anybody can do it.good luck.

    240. hi still not get it. if you paid tax last year and didnt get it all back last year then you will get the money, say if you paid 1,100 tax and you got back 1,100 then you will not get the money, if they only gave you back some of the 1,100 then you will get the money, hope this helps, so dont worry if you didnt get all your tax back last year, you WILL get the money. but i am still waiting on mine, i can wait though as long as its within the next fews weeks would be ok by me. good luck

    275. I am awaiting the tax bonus and have been told I only just made it to the income minimum limit.
    However they at the tax office are trying to tell me that my partner who earned $50,000 last year wont recieve it because he paid tax and didnt get a refund…
    I dont think the tax office know what they are talking about as why would they exclude those who didnt get a refund??? (Ie: paid all there tax with extra owing)
    Centrelink is the same you can ring one day get an answer and ring the next and get a different one..
    MR Rudd should stimulate the economy by sacking all the di##heads at both offices who waste our time and money when calling them…

    Through some stuff up last year I couldn’t do Etax – took about three weeks to find someone who could work out why. After years and years of tax returns some wise person had deleted my DOB. Had to send all sorts of stuff to Melbourne to prove my age but still had to do a manual return because they only update files once a year – just before end of financial year.
    Decided to check that I was in their system today and what do you know———— after hours on hold I appear to be all there but a payment has not been generated for me. They can’t tell me why…..only that they are being done in two phases ……..all the lucky buggers by 16 May and a second phase should pick up unlucky ones like me but her advice was RING ON 17 MAY TO MAKE SURE IT IS GOING TO PICK YOU UP.

    I know that my own bank electronically processes external payments 3 times a day: 9am, 11am and 2pm. I guess if there’s anything to ‘process’ it would turn up after any of these times.
    I just checked my account and got all excited! I thought I saw $900 but I have exactly $90! This sux and I really need my money right now as there is a long time until payday.

    295. Hey – we’ve worked out if you didn’t pay any tax in 2008 you don’t get the $900 bonus. But guess what – all you need to do is work out how much extra income you would have need to declare to have a tax liability of one lousy dollar – then you write to the ATO and say, “oops!, I forgot to put some income in from a part time job last year”. They will adjust your income and send out tax assessment notice that says you have to pay the ATO $1 as well as (by the 16th May) sending 900 big ones straight into your bank account. That’s $899 clear profit for about 5 minutes work – good moolah in anyone’s reckoning.

    I think the part that is confusing people is the having a tax liability adjustment greater than NIL.

    If your unsure if you are getting the payment just drop the ATO a call, I did a few days ago as was unsure about if I was eligible or not as my tax affairs are not straight forward and was told I would get it and I did.

    Spoke with an operator within minutes of calling who was polite and helpfull too.

Hey just to let everyone know if you have moved house and you haven’t changed your address before the payments were made the cheque may have been sent there as I have just found out that’s happened to me. My payment was sent out on the 14th and I was getting worried so I just rang today and they informed me that even though I got my tax back last year in my account my tax agent received my tax in a cheque then put it into my account so the ATO didn’t have my account details so they sent it in a cheque and I don’t live there anymore so they issued me another cheque to my new address. If I hadn’t called(thanks to this Site and all the updates from other people) I wouldn’t have got it for ages. They said it will arrive in the next 14 days. So I just wanted to let everyone know just in case.

    369. Hello all, Im still waiting, waiting also :) Its all a bit exciting to be getting a freebie from the govt. considering I never thought I’d see such a spectacle in my lifetime!! Lol, just felt like ranting to a few of the above i.e. Greedy, Homer Simpson and so forth who have come in and told everyone to settle down, chill out and be patient. Okay, yes I agree this isn’t a hand out, its to stimulate the economy so the govt. isn’t giving money to help anyone but themselves, but have any of you considered that some people maybe a bit more desperate for the money because of loss of jobs to due the recession?? Im lucky with my job, that as a nurse, Im still needed. However, I know a few of my nursing colleagues partners have now lost their jobs because of the recession and employers trying to make a profit by cutting back workers, and evidently these people are jobless, gone down to single income families with 3 kids, a mortgage, ever increasing bills and ever falling savings, and DEPRESSION!! Maybe some of you here need a heart and to get with the program… so just a note, if you see or hear someone having a down moment because of the financial situation, give them an ear to listen and a shoulder to lean on, and dont tell them to be patient and get over it, it may well be the last thing you’ll say to them and they ever hear. Think about it people!!

Taking money out of the economy to put it back in; seeing as most people are going to pay off debt or buy foreign goods it won’t help at all. If the depressed people here -really- can’t wait for the $900 in the next 12 days, I feel the worst is yet to come for you in this lifetime. In other words, be patient and get over it.

    As for us, we are saving ours for the future. My husband’s work has just lost a major client and he was employed to work with them! He lost his last job to the financial crisis last Nov and was luckily re-employed within 48 hours on a better salary. We have learnt our lesson and are now very frugal with the savings! You really do need to have them!

    377. Hey guys im in 4825 and people around me have recieved thier stimulation and I have yet to recieve mine. Im relieved to know that still there are a lot of us who havent recieved it yet from postcodes that have been paid. I was under the understanding that we are to recieve our payments the same way we recieved our tax payments last year but i was told by my accountants that I will be recieving a cheque even though I put mine in via bank deposit. This is confusing as. It would be nice NOT to miss out seeing as a lot of people who never worked but paid tax out of thier centrelink payments gets it. I know it sounds rude an selfish but what the hell, it just does not seem plausible. Im a 2nd year apprentice and i miss out on the training payments because even though I earn really **** house money, I still earn too much to get centrelink payments. Its absolute horse ****. Im glad to be recieving the 900 if i get it at all!

    What -is- interesting to note in terms of party propaganda, that you would learn in economics, is that every slump or recession in Australian economic growth is met with a budget deficit and a Labor government in charge. Not taking sides here buddy, and it seems like you’re the one taking a hypothetical stance here by judging what a Liberal government would do. You call it ‘pulling together’ I’m afraid it’s more like the blind leading the blind. I love your optimism though. Isn’t using borrowed money fun!

    Hey “Truth Bomb” I respect your opinion, and all I can come back with is, no shize sherlock! Im fully aware of how much I will endure in the future, let alone my children, and their children and so forth having to pay back what we’ve been given. But ditto what Stephen said, the pay back in the future is going to be more than just increased mortgages to pay back the 900, and really, what we’re heading for, we won’t even notice the payback effect. Mind you, if your going to nancy yourself with just lame Liberal retorts and not look at the real picture – i.e. the world in which we live in now, then honestly if everyone thought like that, we won’t have to worry about paying back in the future because we won’t have one to live in. Now I hate being all ‘doom and gloom’ and Im really not fussed when I get the 900, so my patience is still working :D
    I hate both the Libs and Labour and what they have both done to the country, but atleast the current govt. is being a bit more proactive and though its not a long term plan, far from, however it does give a bit of hope. So quit shooting everyone down because they’re just a bit excited to be getting this from the govt. I mean, if you’re so against it, how about you donate your 900 it to charity or something so you feel its done some good somewhere and you don’t have to spend it in guilt. I miss out on the training payments and because I worked in remote areas last year I got my tax back. My cousin who isnt on the dole recieved his cheque thanks to Krudd for doing nothing the last year. Seriously way to go for the government for missing out on a whole lot of people to pass it through without taking a thought for those australians that work. I was getting 900 a fortnight on the single parent pension and decided to work for 300 dollars more a fortnight and its ****** me right in the candy. I shouldve stayed on the centrelink payments! I know im distgruntled but I have made so many sacrfices to have a job that it discourages me from working at all. I could be spending time with my daughter instead of living in a town 1600ks away to earn a living. Im not living even.     Other wise waiting around thinking your going to get will probably just leave you with ringing up on the 17th saying WTF is going on with this money?

    As for the people saying this is a gift etc, BS. I didn’t ask the Gov to chuck 40 billion of debt onto everyone and those people who really think their grand kids are going to be paying your tax debt you got now, lol you’ll be paying it off within years with extra taxes and current taxes raised just so the gov can make ends meet.

    SOme people are saying this $900 bonus will be paid off in 6 years at current tax rates, but they’ll jump up soon to pay everything off quick.

    412. hello sarah, if you paid tax last year and did not get it all back when you did your tax. then you will get your 900 from k rudd, if you got back all your tax, then you will not get it and if you didnt work and pay tax, then you will not get it. hope this helps.

    Need to ring up ATO, Banks, Tax Agents to get it back.

    Even if a Tax Agent has been sent it and they cash the money they should send it to out and you can still get it back, but it’s a long process.

    The reason why is that if your meant to get it you should try and get it as you’ll be paying that money back anyway, I’d feel ripped off if I knew I was meant to get $900 from the giv and then told oh and BTW we’ll just take that $900 chuck back out of your tax return this year even if you never got it.

I just called this number 1300 686 636 if you ignore all the ‘where not taking calls till after the 16th May’ and go through to the operator they will tell you definately if you are elligible and if your payment has been sent out when it was sent out. They just did it for me. Give it a go!!!

    428. Nowhere on the ATO site does it say anything about not getting the $900 if all the tax was refunded. That’s the only reason I submitted my tax-return. The eligibility is worded in such a way that people like myself are eligible

    432. Just called the call center – 1300 686 636.

    Was told I am not receiving the stimulus package because I did not pay tax. My income at the time (07/08) was around $8000 and my tax refund was only $82. You need to have paid tax or have earnt above approx $11,000 to be eligible.

I called the hotline and they told me they sent it to the wrong address (despite the fact that I called to change it a month ago)… they said that they are now re-issuing the cheque and it should be in my hands in 4 – 14 business days. No word on why my wife’s cheque has apparently been sent to our accountant. Something tells me the ATO weren’t equipped to run a bonus like this…

Ok, heres some light on the situation, I havent recieved payment yet, so I did some investigqating and realised, even though my refund was an eft… has been sent to my tax accountant in the form of a cheque, which has not been given to me.. slac kers!! So if you want, you can call the tax ofice and update your details, and cancel the cheque sent to your accountant, which as I am overseas works good for me.. (fosters beer is better here too ) and you should be happier to the sum of $900… i wonder how many tax consultants are holding back our money…. hope this helps..

    443. Tuesday afternoon 3.30 i just rang the ato ignored the‘where not taking calls till after the 16th May’
    she told me im eligible and the money was sent yesterday by cheque and will be delivered by Friday
    even though i did my own tax and it was deposited in to my bank by ato
    she didnt say why ,when i questioned her
    im just glad to hear its coming in the mail
    my bank will cash it straight away

Ok, I originally thought I would get the student one, but since my family aren’t tax evaders and are honest they go over the threshold for Aus Study, so I couldn’t get a centrelink payment (we were over by like $1000 or something ridiculous), which is why I don’t get the full-time student payment, even though I am a full-time student and part time worker. And since I only work part-time I apparently don’t qualify (I have heard people talking about hours and amounts $$) for the tax bonus. So because I am middle class and am not a doll bludger, I don’t get anything. ********.

Pissed off: I’m a full time uni student, who had a part time job over the past year…but just like you, since I didn’t make enough to pay tax, and since my parents are over the threshold, I don’t qualify for either the tax bonus nor the $950 teaching and learning bonus. Its not fair…people who already get something from the government are getting several goes at it, while people like you and I get bugger all. The money’s missing the people who need it the most…seriously, great work Labour.

    Despite me not paying tax over the past year, it still ***** me to tears to think that after I graduate from uni at the end of this year and move into full time work, my taxes will be paying for this. Thankfully, it seems the third stimulus package is going to be spent on infrastructure, rather than handouts…even if it is mostly only in the capital cities…at least its something that everyone can benefit from, unlike stupid handouts.

My son owes me $700 and was going to pay me back when he got his $900..last year he sent in a tax return and earnt$7884.00..he was doing a traineeship and studies at Tafe..we just rang the Tax office hotline and checked out the internet news on late payments..I just found out if you earnt less than $11,500 YOU WON’T GET ANYTHING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!SO IT IS ALL ******** !!!!

    482. If you didn’t get the 900 before the 1at of july then you missed out because you left it too late.

    Also you can’t get it if your on the dole as you didn’t earn any money to get any tax money back, you had to of gotten $1 back on the tax return from last year to get it also.

    The Austudy thing was a bit different as you got $900 then $950 of going to uni or what ever.

    The biggest ripoff is the Green taking off with $50 from the $950 for bloody trees, and then have everyone pay that back bit of BS that.
